Flower Beauty: Kiss Stick Velvet and High-Shine Lip Color Review

Saturday, February 2, 2013

A few weeks ago, I heard that Drew Barrymore was launching a Walmart-exclusive beauty line. After serving as the face and Creative Director of Cover Girl for years, she and design and manufacturing firm Maesa Group partnered up to create color makeup products that were packaged and formulated like luxury brands, but with a drugstore price.

This past week, I was searching online for reviews to see what makeup gurus were saying. There have been a couple reviews so far on YouTube and on some blogs.  From what I gathered, early reviewers are loving the BB Cream, the lipsticks, the lip glosses, the loose powder, the liquid eyeliner and the nail polishes the most. As I live really far away from a Walmart, I was really just looking at buying online, but as I continued stalking Walmart.com's Flower Beauty Page, tons of things I wanted to get were starting to go out of stock. That got me nervous I wasn't going to have anything to try out and review, so today, I made the drive in the snow to Walmart to pick up some Flower Beauty makeup!

I have bought (and will review): 1 stick foundation, 2 lipsticks, 1 lip gloss, 3 nail polishes, 1 liquid eyeliner, 1 mascara, and 1 cream eyeshadow. I will break up my first impression reviews into chunks!

For the first review, here are the lipsticks!

Flower Beauty Lipsticks

Packaging: I absolutely love the rose gold detail and the logo is really cool. The color of the lipstick is at the base, surrounded by clear plastic, making it look like it's suspended in air. That's a really cool detail I'm diggin'. I really do feel like this looks like a prestige makeup product.

Formulation: From what I can gather, the Velvet Lip Color is more matte or satin finish and the High-Shine Lipstick definitely has that super shiny quality to it. They're both super creamy to apply.

Color Range: From what I saw in-store, there was a good color variety among the two lines, with the High-Shine having a couple bolder colors.

I absolutely love this color. It's just a wearable muted mid-tone pinky nude. It applied really nicely on the lips. This is a great everyday color. I will be rocking this at work next week. I haven't tested wear time yet, but I will update this post when I do! My only gripe is that the color on the packaging makes it seem like this should be brighter and peachier. All these products are sticker-sealed, which is good, but makes it impossible to double-check the color before buying.

In the swatch, Petal Kiss is on the left. These are so similar! Since the Velvet Lip Colors are supposed to lean more towards matte, Heiress is definitely shinier than Petal Kiss

I love Petunia Petals! This is definitely a night-on-the-town lipstick, with its rich dark fuschia color and shine, shine, shine! I 100% will be picking up more of the High-Shines as I think they definitely remind me of on-trend prestige lipsticks. The combination of bold color and shine is amazing. Warning: This looks to me like it stains the lips - I love that, but I know others are not a fan.  Note that the color displayed on the packaging is spot-on.

In the swatch, Petunia Petals is on the right. It's definitely shinier, but in person, these two look very similar, even though the swatch makes it look like Petunia Petals is much darker.
