Review: Rimmel Wake Me Up Foundation

Long time no blog — but I'm back!

I've been reading so many good things about Rimmel London's Wake Me Up foundation from British beauty gurus, yet Rimmel doesn't sell this particular product in the U.S. so I hadn't been able to try it. Lo and behold, Asos sells a bunch of Rimmel products that aren't sold here! Of course I had to get it. The only bad thing is that on Asos, it is definitely a lot more expensive than Rimmel products usually are (this cost me $15.24). I just received this in the mail, and tried it for the first time today.

One small pump shows that this foundation is pretty thick (but doesn't apply cakey!).

Here's the foundation blended in (no flash).

Here's Wake Me Up blended in (with flash).
You'll see that there's tons of shimmers.

After 11 hours of wear (no flash).

Packaging: As you see from the top picture, this comes with a pump! Yes, drugstore foundations with pumps!

Its schtick: It claims to have an "anti fatigue effect and radiant glow."

Shade: I have 100 Ivory, which I believe is the lightest shade. I have tried True Ivory in the other Rimmel foundations, but I do believe that Ivory works best for me in the winter. I was really happy with this shade match. However, I got lucky — the shade range for Rimmel foundations sucks, it looks like there's only 6 shades!

How I Applied: This morning, I applied Wake Me Up with a Beauty Blender, and I really loved that combination. I'm sure this would apply great with a Sigma F80 brush as well.

Smell: Ugh! The only bad thing about this foundation is that is smells like the other Rimmel foundations! A gross chemically smell. But it does go away after you've applied it on your skin.

Coverage + How Long it Lasted: This gives you medium coverage, and I do believe it's buildable. I like that I can still see my freckles! This pic of me is after 11 hours of wear (I'm wearing primer and a bit of powder on my nose, forehead, and chin, as I usually do). I would only wear this on "good skin" days, so I don't recommend this for people with troubled skin or super oily skin. For me, with primer and powder, this lasted hours longer than a very similar drugstore foundation, L'Oreal True Match Lumi Healthy Luminous Makeup.

Finish: This isn't super dewy, but with its shimmers it definitely does make you look healthy and highlighted in certain areas. Again, the finish is super similar to L'Oreal True Match Lumi Healthy Luminous foundation.

After 11 hours of wear (flash).
Under flash photography, you can definitely see the shimmers.

Overall impression: I am very impressed and really happy I bought this. Wake Me Up will definitely be repurchased for daytime wear — I don't recommend wearing this for nighttime, as the shimmers may cause flashback if you get your pictures taken (see above). I do recommend using a primer underneath and some powder on your T-zone to really get you 10+ hours of wear.

I will definitely buy True Ivory for the summer months. If you're in the U.S. and don't want to deal with buying online on Asos, or if you don't fit the 6 shades Rimmel has to offer, then I highly recommend the L'Oreal True Match Lumi Healthy Luminous foundation, as it's super similar but offers tons of shades.

Hope you enjoyed!

  2. It hasn't been super super sunny where I live for me to check, but no, it's not THAT shimmery on the face, just glowy - think J.Lo glowy...But Asos also sells the Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum that is known to be super similar. I've just gotten that in the mail as well and it definitely has a lot less shimmer when swatched on my hand, but the same finish on the face. Thanks for commenting! -Anaïs
