My Thoughts on Anastasia Beverly Hills Sad Girl Liquid Lipstick

Sunday, February 15, 2015

Last week, I finally got my hands on Sad Girl, a purpley-vampy shade from Anastasia Beverly Hills' new liquid lipstick collection. I had read that this was one of other beauty bloggers' favorite shades because of its unique shimmer, and I love vampy lips in the winter, so I ordered this and Pure Hollywood, the other much-talked-about shade.

The reason why I like matte liquid lipsticks so much is that 1) I love anything matte, duh! 2) the doe-foot applicator makes it super easy to apply, 3) and they dry super quickly and they last through eating, kissing, etc.! I cannot stress enough how much I prefer this type of formula over the two-step longwear products that you see at the drugstore (L'Oréal Infallible Pro-Last Lipcolor — I'm looking at you).

One thing to note is that you absolutely have to make sure your lips are nicely moisturized, because this type of formula will accentuate a chapped lip! Most of the time, I apply a heavy-duty lip balm the night before I know I want to wear a liquid lipstick, and the next morning, I exfoliate my lips gently with my toothbrush to make sure my lips are primed and ready!

Compared to the next-darkest liquid lipstick in my collection, Limecrime's Velveteen in Wicked, Sad Girl is obviously darker and more purple. Honestly, you can barely see the shimmer on the lips. Upon application, I don't prefer one formula over the other, as they are very similar. I wore Sad Girl out and about running errands on Saturday to test the wear time. It wore pretty well on me, and it started breaking down in the inside of my lips. I was able to lightly re-apply in the areas without too much problem. While I personally wouldn't wear this shade in the daytime again (it's just too vampire-chic with my current pale skin and I definitely got some looks), I will definitely be wearing Sad Girl on nights out!

For ladies with my complexion, my recommendation to pull off this color would be to scale back the cheek color and opt for a nude-ish blush like Tarte's Exposed Amazonian Clay blush. In the picture above, I also kept the eyes simple with my go-to matte light brown eye and just lots of mascara. But hey, for very special events, I would definitely go all out with the whole smokey eye and winged liner thing.

  1. I'm all about the vampy colors at the moment, so this shade is calling my name! Glad to hear it's cruelty free too!

    1. Yeah, it's a really fun shade. I wonder if it's named after Lana Del Ray's "Sad Girl."
