Review + Photos: Paula's Choice The Nude Mattes Eyeshadow Palette (LE)

Sunday, March 16, 2014

You know my blog name so you know of course I had to pick up the limited edition Paula's Choice The Nude Mattes Eyeshadow Palette ($40). Once I found out that makeup god Wayne Goss had consulted on it, I was SOLD. This weekend, I played with it for the first time and I am in love. From the shadows I've tested so far (see look below), these shadows are super blendable and pigmented.

Take a look at close-up photos and my Cara Delevingne-inspired hazy brown eye look using the palette below!

UPDATE: I have a darker classic eye look up on the blog using this same palette as well here.

There are 12 eyeshadows in the palette. 11 of them are matte and there's 1 satin shimmer. Some shades look almost too alike, but then you realize that they're cool and warm versions of each other. I haven't tried the eye brush yet, but it looks like a good brush for packing on shadow on the lid. These shadows aren't incredibly buttery, but they aren't dry either. I did notice that they didn't have that much fallout compared to other matte eyeshadows.

To me, this is an expanded version of the Naked Basics palette. Even though I've only used this once so far, I can tell that this is going to much loved. It's annoying it's limited edition — it's going to make me not want to use it every day! But these are such wearable colors that I may just have to. I love how Paula's Choice and Wayne threw in that lovely soft shimmer shade, Pink Sugar, so I don't have to dig out another shadow to highlight the inner corner and brow bone.

Cream, Beige, Pink Sugar (satin shimmer), Café au Lait

Tan, Chestnut, Clay, Plum Taupe

Gunmetal Grey, Chocolate Truffle, Coffee, Onyx

The photo above shows Cara Delevingne's famous brown smokey eye.
I wanted to make my version a little more daytime appropriate.

Here I am with my best Cara Delevingne fashion face (not to be confused with her crazy face)

Shadows Used

Inner Corner: Pink Sugar
Lid: Beige
Outer-V: Clay
Crease: Tan + Clay
Lower Lashline: Tan + Clay

Other Eye Products

Brows:  Tarte Amazonian Clay Brow Mousse 'Taupe'
Eye Primer: Tarte Clean Slate Primer
Top Waterline Eyeliner: Revlon Luxurious Color Eyeliner 'Brushed Pewter'
Lower Waterline Eyeliner: Rimmel London ScandalEyes Waterproof Kohl Kajal 'Taupe '
Mascara:  Em Cosmetics Lash Gallery Lengthening Mascara

Brushes/Tools

Tarte Eyebrow Double-Ended Spoolie Brush // Sigma E46 Inner Corner Brush // MAC 239 Eye Shader Brush // Sephora Profesionnel Rounded Crease Brush 13 // Sephora Profesionnel Blending Brush 29 // Sigma E40 Blending Brush // Essence of Beauty Fine Crease Brush // Sigma E30 Pencil Brush

The two keys to this eye look is to have a good set of makeup brushes and to blend, blend, blend (especially in the lower lashline). No top liner is needed, but definitely line the waterline. You want the eyes to look a little mysterious, but not '90s heroin chic.

* The Tarte brow mousse leans too warm in photos, but in person, it's fine.

  1. I'm thrilled to see your look as I bought the palette two weeks ago. I've used it three times making a mess with blending. I find it so hard and am disappointed in it. I'm used to more satin finishes but my now 40 eyes need matte tho I find then cakey at times. I look forward to trying your look and will use some different brushes this time. Thanks for the review!

    1. Hi Kenny! Glad you enjoyed! Maybe try a moisturizing eye primer like Urban Decay's new(ish) anti-aging Primer Potion first?
